Alcobev is a term used for alcoholic beverages, including a wide variety of drinks that contain ethanol, such as spirits (whiskey, vodka, rum), beer, wine, and liqueurs. The alcobev industry is globally significant, with varying consumption patterns, regulatory frameworks, and marketing strategies across different regions.

According to the International Spirits & Wines Association of India (ISWAI), the alcobev sector was valued at US$ 52.4 billion in 2021, contributing approximately 2% to India’s nominal GDP.

The industry also plays a vital role in state tax receipts, accounting for 24.6% of the total. In terms of production, around 1,235 million liters of Extra Neutral Alcohol (ENA) were used in producing ready-to-drink alcoholic beverages and Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) in 2021. The production of 741 million liters of ENA for IMFL requires about 1.9 million tonnes of grain, which is about 0.6% of India’s total grain output for the year.

Moreover, the alcobev sector supports over 79 lakh (7.9 million) people directly and indirectly, constituting 1.5% of India’s total workforce. The sector is also a significant part of India’s organized food and beverage industry, contributing around 14-19% of total income from alcoholic beverage sales, estimated at Rs. 28,000 crore (US$ 3.36 billion). Additionally, around 2.9% of agricultural workers are involved in producing grains, sugarcane, and grapes used in spirits and wine production.

This industry is a major economic contributor, not only in terms of tax revenues but also in terms of employment and agricultural activity.
