Travel and Tourism

India’s travel and tourism sector is a key contributor to the nation’s economy, driving GDP growth, generating employment, and boosting foreign exchange earnings. In 2023, the industry contributed more than $231 billion to India’s GDP, with projections suggesting it will reach $523 billion by 2034.
The sector also supported over 81 million jobs across various industries. Since 2000, India has experienced a notable increase in foreign exchange earnings from tourism. Currently, tourism accounts for approximately 9% of the country’s GDP, offering both direct employment (in travel agencies, hotels, and transportation) and indirect jobs (in areas like crafts, agriculture, and food supply).
India offers diverse types of tourism, such as heritage, cultural, medical, business, and sports tourism. To further promote the sector, the government has introduced new visa policies and launched initiatives to support niche tourism products. In 2023, the Ministry of Tourism declared the year as "Visit India Year" to encourage international travel to India.
